Measuring Hermit Crab Shells....
When selecting shells for hermit crabs, it's important to have a variety of sizes and types available, as hermit crabs will often change shells as they grow or as they seek more suitable environments.
Measuring shell openings
Measuring shell openings for hermit crabs can be challenging due to the inherent uniqueness of each shell. Here are some factors that contribute to the difficulty:
- **Variability in Shell Shapes**: Shells come in various shapes and sizes, ranging from spiraled to elongated forms. This diversity can make it hard to determine the exact width and height of the opening, as each shell's design may not conform to standard measurements. Shells typically have "O" or "D" openings.
- **Wear and Tear**: Many shells are collected from the wild, and their openings may be worn down or damaged. This alteration can affect the measurements and create inconsistencies in how they fit hermit crabs.
- **Non-Uniform Openings**: The openings of shells may not be perfectly symmetrical or circular. Some may have irregularities, making it difficult to take accurate measurements from one angle.
- **Growth and Adaptation**: Hermit crabs can change shells frequently, and they often prefer shells that might not fit perfectly. This behavior can make it tricky to gauge what size opening is ideal, as they may select shells that are slightly larger or smaller than their previous ones.
- **Measurement Technique**: Accurately measuring requires careful technique, and slight variations in how the ruler or caliper is positioned can lead to different readings. Ensuring precision is essential but can be challenging with uniquely shaped shells.
- **Personal Preferences**: Each hermit crab may have individual preferences for the type of shell they feel comfortable in, which can further complicate the selection process. What works for one crab may not be suitable for another, even if the measurements are similar.
We highly recommend using a digital caliper.
Digital Calipers are currently sold out. They will be back in stock soon in our online store HERE. If you wish to be notified when Calipers are available for purchase please utilize the Contact Us form.
Please review these directions to accurately measure your shell with Calipers:
- Use the upper jaws of the tool to measure the inside opening. (As shown in the picture above).
- The lower jaws can be used for measuring shell length.
In the absence of Calipers you can use a standard ruler which we include at no charge in every order placed with our online store.
Please review the following directions to accurately measure your shell with a ruler:
- Place the ruler over the shell opening (as shown above).
