Our Story...

It began as a simple family vacation to the beach 5 years ago. Rowan has loved water since he was a few months old. He learned to swim early and at the time was 5 years years old and swam like a fish. Rowan struggled with high energy and a very short attention span; being in the water almost always helped Rowan at home. We thought he would enjoy the ocean, and maybe we could relax just a bit. We were absolutely thrilled to see Rowan not only become calm, happy and focused but his entire body relaxed, his smile was brighter than the sun. He loved the ocean, the sand, and the shells. We spent hours just watching him in what seemed to be his natural element.

On a trip down the boardwalks, Rowan discovered Hermit Crabs for the first time. With a love for animals deeply embedded in our family, we expected his next question. And of course he adopted not one but two little Hermits. Rowan bringing those 2 little crabs home brought the ocean all the way back to our home for him. Those little guys have given so much to Rowan. And his love and care for them hasn’t faded. Rowan's Hermies are his first thought in the morning and his last before bed.

That's been 5 years ago now. Rowan turned 10 this Summer, he is raising 7 adopted Hermit Crabs- Iron Man, Superman, SpongeBob, Flower, Turtle, Snowball, and Tamatoa. Iron Man joined our family several weeks ago and is the catalyst for the creation of Rowan's Seaside Treasures. Iron Man is Rowan's largest crab ever, he loves attention and is always up to something. He came to Rowan in a much too small shell. After looking for a new house and not having any luck, Rowan asked his Grandma to help. Grandma was able to find a big bag of shells but only one shell was usable. So off she went to search again. She found a couple that might work but she misunderstood the ordering form- when several large boxes arrived a week later all we could do was laugh.

And here we are; literally swimming in beautiful shells. Rowan is passionate about all Hermit Crabs having easier access to better housing and his Grandmother's mistake has given him an opportunity to work towards his goal of sharing his best shells with other Hermies and their people.
