These shells belong to the gastropod family of shells. The shells are top shaped and are smooth with a banded pattern cut out. Its color pattern is rich brown, variously ornamented with dark bands and narrow stripes. The opening is pearly.  Most are found in warm tropical seas, near coral. This species occurs in the Red Sea and in the Indian Ocean off Madagascar, Mozambique, Chagos and Mauritius; also in the West Pacific and from Western Australia to southern Queensland. Measuring between 1"-2"
